A few notes before getting into the rules.
Though RP is great fun, and we encourage all manner of characters, IC is NOT an excuse for bad behavior, and it is never acceptable to try and use the game as a way of taking out your bad day on anyone else. Real people play the game same as you, and they have real feelings too. (Feel free to hunt monsters instead, as monsters don't have their own real feelings.)
Roclasmpy is a Role Play server! We won't enforce 24/7 staying in character, or that there must be constant RP at all times. However, it is enforced 24/7 that any roleplay taking place, is to be respected. If you do not wish to join, the world is plenty big enough for you to go somewhere else and find your own fun.
To the hardcore role players: While this is a roleplay server, finding someone who does not wish to roleplay at that moment in time, or who prefers to hunt right then instead of stay in character, does not make for a valid complaint.
Last but not least, there isn’t a rule that says you have to like everyone on the server, or that you have to play with everyone on the server, or that you have to roleplay with everyone on the server. BUT you are responsible for your actions and there are rules about respecting everyone on the server.
1 – Nothing happens to a character without the players' approval.
You only get to decide what happens to your character.
You don’t get to decide for someone else what happens to their character, or what type of roleplay is about to take place for them.
This is especially important for any potentially bad actions that could happen to the character. MAKE SURE the player is okay with their character being kidnapped, being a prisoner, torture, or worse, BEFORE it begins to take place. (Taking a moment OOC to talk to things out can save on possible hurt feelings and misunderstandings with your fellow players.)
2 – Everyone is the author of THEIR character's story.
We all have a beloved character that belongs to someone else. (How can you not love the fun characters that are played by your friends?) And we all at one time or another, play around with fun ‘what if’ ideas in our heads for that character. But, it is up to the PLAYER of that character, if they wish for those what if ideas, to ever be more than fun ideas.
On a more serious note, you don’t get to try and tell someone else, who to bring to an event, and how you want them to behave. It is their character. If you want a specific character, or need a specific something to happen, speak up beforehand, and we will do what we can to work with you to help make it happen, but we’ll do it by staying true to our own characters, and things might have to happen a little differently than what you originally had planned.
Lastly, part of roleplay and story writing is character development. Meaning while there are some aspects that may always be true to a specific character, it is NOT bad role play for an event or interaction to either create a permanent change in someone or to momentarily cause them to act out of the norm. We all have those moments in real life, and it’s perfectly reasonable that our characters would as well. It’s up to the owner of the character when, how, and if those moments happen though.
3 – Godmoding and Autoing
Godmoding is regarded as the ultimate low in RPing and is not only disrespectful but is also unfair. Godmoding could entail either a role player controlling other people's characters without permission, performing closed-ended attacks or creating a character that is seemingly invincible.
Autoing is when a player performs an action without giving the affected players a chance to respond. For example, running up to somebody and saying *Stabs in the heart* and then running off would be auto-hitting. Auto also applies to non-combative actions to which another player might have a reaction. Saying, *The black knight slips past the guards and into the castle,* while white knights are guarding the entrance to the white knight's castle would be auto-walking on the premise that, in all likelihood, those knights would stop you before you got past them. This can easily be fixed with a simple rewording. Adding works like "tries to" or "attempts to" to clarify that your character intends to perform said action, but his success depends on the responses of those around him.
(NOTE: if given permission to let something play out, autoing may be acceptable. Example, when Eric kidnapped my character Kiko. This was a planned event, she was meant to be kidnapped, and it was not in her character to fight back, so pretty much, whatever Eric ‘tried’ to do, would happen, and it was a safe bet that my character would just go along with it. Thus he had my permission to stop typing *tries* with every emote.)
We have online dice rollers if you would rather try for random luck to see how things play out as well.
4 – Hissy Fits
It is bad form, to keep your character logged in, and to just refuse to RP because you are unhappy that something isn't going exactly the way you want it to. It's also a bit childish. If something upsets you, THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO GO ABOUT EXPRESSING IT. Use your big girl/boy words and actually talk and communicate.
5 – OOC Knowledge
When someone uses OOC knowledge, they are reacting to events and characters using out of character knowledge. We want the full story to be told, but we want the full story to be told well. If your character doesn’t have a reasonable way to know a specific something, then you might need to work a bit harder finding a way for them to learn something or find something out.
If you need help coming up with ideas on how to go about this, or how to get your character to the right place, at the right time, so they can see something or learn something or overhear something, speak up, we’ll help make it happen!
6 – Unusual or anything that is not normal
Many want to play that fierce werewolf, or a mysterious assassin, or a troubled teen that happens to be half-demon and thus is very misunderstood.
We are okay with this. But if it’s something that goes against the grain, isn’t your traditional human, elven, or UO lore, then you need to back it up! Post a detailed profile, or story explaining where and how this came to be, or a post explaining and detailing this new race or group of people we have not heard of before.
This makes sure everyone is on the same page, and puts an end to people accusing you of making an unfair character, and also puts an end to anyone being able to make their characters overpowered with an excuse of 'that's how I wrote them up" or "it's part of their backstory" or "it's a racial ability". We just want you to share with the rest of the class! (If it's a new race or something you would like to copywrite, I suggest doing a poor mans copywrite before sharing it publicly. We want to share creative ideas and have fun with it, but we don't want anyone's work being stolen!)
7 – Stealing
Role-playing a thief can be great fun! But the role played stealing needs to fall into one of the categories below.
- It is part of an active story line, such as stealing a mystical herb from a wizards vault to try and make a cure for something. (keep in mind the wizards vault would be part of the world, NOT a players house!)
- Actual acts of stealing would mean stealing from a crate or chest in a dungeon or town, basically public places in the world. NOT players, or their backpacks, or their houses.
- IF something is stolen from a players backpack or house or person, IT IS PLANNED OUT BEFOREHAND and the thief HAS THE PLAYERS PERMISSION.
In short: FAKE RP stealing is allowed. REAL stealing from players, is NOT.
8 – Good VS Evil
Some of us greatly enjoy and prefer the good guy aspect. Others enjoy playing the bad guy. BUT, so that everyone is able to attend ANY planned event, EVERYONE should consider making at least 1 good guy character, and 1 bad guy character. Even if you don't play them that often, still have them.
IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO MAKE A BAD GUY OR GOOD GUY CHARACTER, THEN YOU DO NOT GET TO COMPLAIN IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO PARTICIPATE AT AN EVENT! If you need help coming up with ideas for how to play a good guy or bad guy character, please ask! (Keep in mind that a 'bad guy' can be a 'goofy bad guy' like Team Rocket.)
9 – Not a Dating Site
Last but not least, and I can't stress this enough, UO IS NOT A DATING SITE!!!! Yes, we RP many relationships, but it's good clean fun and just a story. Could real romance blossom, yes. BUT IF YOUR ONLY REASON FOR BEING HERE IS TO TRY AND FIND A SOULMATE, THAN IT'S THE WRONG REASON AND THIS IS THE WRONG SERVER.
Also note, that just like with bad actions happening to your character, romantic happenings must be approved of by the player before they happen! Some enjoy a more detailed romance, others prefer for the more private moments to just be implied. Both styles of play are acceptable, and for anyone wishing to keep things implied, there is no pressure to do anything further.
